FIFA calls for FAM election ASAP

The international governing body of association football, FIFA, has called to hold the election of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) as soon as possible. FIFA made the remark in a letter to the President of FAM Ahmed Thoriq (Tom) saying that Bassam Adheel Jaleel was dismissed from his position of the General Secretary of FAM unfairly and ordering to reinstate him. The order was given to FIFA in reference to an English translation of the FAM Regulations. But the article 38-3 of the regulations passed at the FAM Congress on 7 May 2016 says that only the President has the authority to appoint and dismiss the General Secretary. The letter signed by the General Secretary of FIFA said that according to FAM Regulations, if 50 percent of the Executive Committee of FAM resigns, an election must be held and so called to the FAM President to hold the election. Five members of the Executive Committee appointed by the former MP for Mahibadhoo constituency, Thoriq after winning the FAM election signed on 19 September 2016. The members who resigned said that main course of their resignation was being excluded from major decisions being made by the President including the dismissal of the General Secretary. The biggest task ahead for Bassam is to call the FAM Congress for an election.
