Adhaalath Party leader shifted to house arrest

Adhaalath Party's convicted leader Sheikh Imran Abdulla was shifted back to house arrest on Tusday.
Sheikh Imran was convicted for terrorism and sentenced for 12 years after his involvement in the major opposition rally, May-Day parade, in 2015.
The Criminal Court had sentenced him on terrorism charges over his controversial speech at the May-Day gathering, accusing him of inciting violence.
Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) said that this was a temporary change until some repair work is completed in Imran's prison cell.
After the alleged coup in early February this year, there was an upsurge in political activities in Maldives, and Imran was subsequently taken back into MCS' custody.
His family has been requesting to shift him back to house arrest, stating that he was not getting sufficient medical treatment at jail.
The United Nations (UN) Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had also earlier called on Maldives to free Sheikh Imran and compensate him.
