Council watchdog, civil service body to probe opposition council graft case
A team from Local Government Authority (LGA) and Civil Service Commission (CSC) is to visit Noonu Atoll Miladhoo to investigate serious complaints, including corruption allegations, against Miladhoo’s opposition-controlled island council. President Ilyas Abdul Samad of the council, which consists of four from the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) one belonging to the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), has been accused of abusing power and destroying documents. Meanwhile, allegations against his deputy Areef Abu Bakr, claiming he had worked with administrative employees to facilitate corruption, have also been raised. LGA spokesperson Abdulla Azmeen said the special team to be deployed to Miladhoo was put together jointly with CSC as the case involves councillors and administrative staff. Azmeen also refuted rumours that the council will be annulled, saying that LGA has not made any such decision yet.
