Police Club crowned National Women’s Volleyball champs
Police Club was crowned champions of the National Women’s Volleyball Championship 2015 after defeating Club Polestar of Haa Alif atoll Ihavandhoo island 3 – 1 in the final that took place in the inner court of the Social Centre late Wednesday. Police Club won the first set 25 – 16 with ease. Both teams were on par during the second game until Polestar took the lead and won the set 25 – 18. The beginning of the third set saw Polestar in the lead again. Police Club eventually overtook them and won 25 – 18. Polestar’s performance declined during the final set and Police Club bagged the game with an easy 25 – 15. Police Club’s coach Mohamed Nadeem later commented they did not receive much time to train and prepare. “This win is the result of great teamwork with the support of the players, officials, management and all our well-wishers,” said Nadeem. Nadeem also praised Polestar’s performance, remarking that the changes they brought to the game during the second set had been a hard challenge to Police Club, resulting in their loss. Meanwhile, Polestar’s coach Ahmed Sofwaan stated that in the wake of five other pressured matches, the final was more exhausting for the team. “Additionally, Police Club has the height advantage [over Polestar],” Sofwaan added. Queen of the match was Hawwa Rashida of Police Club, while Queen of the tournament went to Polestar’s Thai player Bualee Jaroensri. Best Coach of the tournament went to Nadeem of Police Club, while Club Polestar was awarded Fair Play team. The Dream Team of the champion included Hawwa Saha of Dhiddhoo Teenage Boys, Khadheeja Ibrahim, Suhana Ahmed, Aishath Shaffa, Fathimath Thahoora, Hawwa Rashida and Nazima Abdul Wahid of Police Club. Under 19 Best Player of the tournament was awarded to Aminath Areesha of Naifaru Juvenile, while the Under 21 Best Player was Fathimath Joozan of Dhiddhoo Teenage Boys. This marks the eighth championship win for Police Club. The trophy was awarded to the team by the chief guest of the match, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
