Will eradicate culture of decisions by road protests: Home Minister

Home Minister Umar Naseer has said that he will eradicate the culture of street protests as a way of dictating state policies. He vowed to make the streets of Male’ safe for all citizens.
Speaking to Miadhu, Home Minister said that the Government will always conduct their activities within the means of the Constitution. He added that the opposition also has to conduct their activities in the same manner.
Minister Umar said that in the past the opposition had used street demonstrations near the residences of the rulers to intimidate the leaders. However, he said that day has passed and it would be unwise for the opposition to think that method will work.
“MDP gathered near Colonel Nazim’s residence the most. They gathered near the residence of whichever Minister they wanted to protest against. That day has passed,” he said.
Minister Umar said the opposition were welcome to hold their meetings and political events. He said if any issue was observed, the independent commissions and agencies will investigate the issue, when the issue was submitted.
He added that there were venues for all political events, such as political podiums, Parliament and other avenues.
Minister Umar said the roads were not the appropriate venue for such events. He also said the roads had to be made safe for all. “Roads are public property, used by many. It is not a place to make life difficult for the public,” Minister Umar said.
Minister Umar said when the roads are blocked, the development of the nation is disrupted. He added that the Government will halt any action that disrupts national development.
“The aim of this Government is to develop the nation. Facilitate opportunities for the public, enrich their lives. That cannot be carried out with continuous disruptions on the roads,” he said.
Minister Umar said that the Government will always welcome those political events run in the country, within the limits of the law.
