Nasheed’s Office calls to investigate Correctional service order

Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Office has appealed to the Maldives Police Service to investigate the authenticity of the letter issued by Maldives Correctional Service, regarding his house arrest.
A statement released by the Office said that the investigation was not proceeding to acceptable standards, was lengthy and contributed to a lengthy sentence in jail for Nasheed.
The statement added that due to this, Nasheed was deprived from many of the civil rights granted to him under the constitution and that this was deeply concerning to the office.
The statement noted that the letter issued by the Correctional Service was a legally binding document and as such, the Government had to implement the terms on the document.
The Office said that Nasheed was delivered a 13 year term, which was to be initially served in jail. The decision was amended, by the Correctional Services on the 19th of July, when he was transferred to house arrest. However, the decision was reversed by the Police on 23rd August, when Nasheed was returned back to jail, citing that the letter issued by the Corrections was a forged one.
Following the transfer Maldives Police Service had declared that they were investigating the issue. The statement added that Correctional Services had handed over the original letter to the Police on 12th November.
The statement added that the letter submitted to the Police and the letters sent to former President Nasheed and his wife Laila Ali on 21st June and the letter sent to former President Nasheed on 23rd June were prepared from the same place.
