Jumuhoory Party decides to contest in the upcoming presidential elections

The council of Jumuhoory Party has passed resolution to contest in the upcoming presidential elections.
At the 91st meeting of the JP national council held today, the leadership of the party proposed the motion to the members.
While proposing the motion, the leader of JP Qasim Ibrahim said that, he is proposing it because, due to the amendments in the constitution he is unable to run for presidency and a lot of party members are questioning whether JP will contest in the elections. He further said that even though he is not able to contest, he wants to provide opportunity for other members of the party who might be running for the post on behalf of Jumuhoory Party.
“The question is not whether I can contest or not. It will go as stated in the constitution. The question is whether Jumuhoory Party will nominate a candidate for the election or not. That is something the council should decide. Even before, it is the council that decides whether JP will contest in an election or not” said Qasim Ibrahim.
The 18 members of the council who participated in today’s meeting unanimously voted for JP to contest in the elections.
In addition, Deputy PG Leader MP for Kinbidhoo constituency Abdullah Riyaz proposed to start a campaign to double the number of party members. His motion was passed as well and a small committee was formed to carry out that task.
The secretary general of JP said that they have filed a case at the high court against the elections commission for removing 2600 members from the party saying that they do not have finger print. He said that the court did not yet inform whether they have accepted or rejected the case.
