Government will officially roll-out the initiative to document the life stories and memories of senior citizens amid efforts to preserve the country’s rich history and culture, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage, Adam Naseer Ibrahim has revealed.
In an interview with PSM News, Minister Adam Naseer said efforts are now underway to officially roll-out the initiative to collect the oral history of senior citizens, which includes gathering relevant resources, material and translations.
"Gathering information or memories of the elderly means that you can document certain kinds of memories according to certain scientific norms and curate questions and meet them on different days. So let’s say we take a sample of 10 people from each island in their 50s and 60s, we will be able to take the account of a certain period of our history,” he explained.
Once the official documentation is complete, the charesterics, cultures and principles of our ancestors can be identified and determined, he said, adding that such information will be significantly useful for the future.
In addition, the Minister revealed that efforts are underway to create a uniform framework this year. He said that the government is also working to find ways to officially determine national assets, sites, resources and wealth through the collection of official records and documentation available in the Maldives and abroad.
The Minister said this initiative is a huge task to identify the skills, characteristics and the unique ingenuity of the Maldivian people, which he pledged to officially commence this year.
