The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has announced that 39 sewerage projects have been completed so far during the current presidential term.
According to the Ministry, the completed works include projects newly awarded by the current administration as well as those initiated by previous governments. While work on 79 sewerage-related projects has been carried out so far this term, 39 have been fully completed and 40 are newly contracted projects.
The government has also taken over several stalled projects and reassigned them to new contractors to expedite the process. Many have been transferred to subsidiary companies, with state-owned companies now overseeing implementation to accelerate completion.
At present, 146 out of 187 inhabited islands in the Maldives have operational sewerage systems. Work is ongoing in all the remaining islands to establish the system.
Earlier this year, Parliament amended existing legislation to require all islands to have operational water and sewerage systems by 2027. The original law, passed in 2020, granted a period of five years to complete the works. However, the progress fell short of the target. The amendment now mandates that all remaining work be completed within the next two years.
Access to clean water and sewerage services are basic and fundamental services necessary for all citizens.
