President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Friday, has expressed keenness on strengthening collaboration with New Zealand across areas of mutual interest, both bilaterally and in the international arena.
He made the remarks in a letter to Dame Cindy Kiro, Governor-General of New Zealand.
In his letter, the President reflected on the values of partnership, respect, and unity enshrined in the Treaty of Waitangi, noting its enduring influence on New Zealand’s national identity. He underscored the Maldives’ appreciation for its close and friendly ties with New Zealand, citing a shared commitment to cooperation and mutual understanding. He also expressed a strong interest in deepening collaboration in areas of common interest, both bilaterally and through multilateral platforms.

In a separate letter to New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, the President highlighted the strong friendship forged through more than five decades of cooperation and goodwill, expressing sincere appreciation for New Zealand’s continued support and partnership. He voiced confidence that bilateral relations would continue to grow in a mutually beneficial manner.
President Muizzu extended his personal best wishes for the good health and well-being of both leaders, as well as for the continued peace, progress, and prosperity of the people of New Zealand.
In a message shared on his official X account, he reaffirmed these sentiments, noting that Waitangi Day highlights the importance of embracing diversity in fostering national unity and progress.
Waitangi Day is marked annually on 6 February to commemorate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840, the founding document of New Zealand.
