Maldivian Democratic Party’s chairperson-elect Ali Waheed has said that the current administrating is democratic by name، but is actually a dictatorship.
Speaking at the first news conference since the recent party election، Ali Waheed said that opposing sides should support each other، if such support leads to the betterment of the people، and that each successive administrating should surpass the politics of the previous administration.
Moreover، Ali Waheed said that with the current administration having failed، MDP will win the next election. The dawn of political parties is over، and people will now see the sun rising to a modern democracy، he said.
Speaking of MDP’s past policies، Ali Waheed said that MDP will change policies that the people have rejected the next time coming، and that MDP will show a much more sturdy، responsible face.
Speaking of the parliament، Ali Waheed said that MDP’s parliamentarians will not be let down by the lack of numbers، and that MDP will soon start using the committees to put pressure on the government.
Ali Waheed said that the current administration will face a high bar that needs to be passed in the next election، and that this administration will face its share of tests going forward. The 43-strong parliament majority will not be able to protect the government forever، he said.
In addition to Ali Waheed، Sunday’s news conference was attended by vice president-elect Mohamed Shifaa and vice chairperson-elect Ali Niyaz. MDP’s president-elect، the incumbent president Mohamed Nasheed was notably absent from the conference.
