President Dr Mohamed Muizzu extended his congratulations on Thursday to the United States on the occasion of its Independence Day, addressing his message to President Donald Trump, the US government, and the American people.
In a statement issued via social media, President Muizzu conveyed his best wishes for the nation’s enduring sovereignty and development. “I wish continued freedom and progress to the American people,” he said.
The Fourth of July marks the 249th anniversary of US Independence Day, commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776. On that date, the thirteen American colonies formally severed ties with British rule, launching the Revolutionary War and laying the groundwork for the eventual establishment of the United States.
Formal diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the United States began in 1966, following the Maldives’ own declaration of independence. Shortly thereafter, the United States recognised the sovereign nation and appointed its inaugural ambassador to the country.
