The Democrats have established a parliamentary group and elected Central-Henveiru MP Ali Azim as the PG leader.
The party held an internal election on Thursday, September 14, to elect members for five designations of the parliamentary group.
While Azim was elected for the PG's leadership position, Central-Maafannu MP Ibrahim Rasheed and Gadhdhoo MP Ahmed Zahir were elected as deputy leaders of the PG group.
Besides this, Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed was elected as the group's secretary general, and North-Machchangolhi MP Mohamed Rasheed was elected the parliamentary group's whip.
The Democrats, which contested in the first round of the presidential election, was founded by Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed along with 12 other members, all of whom exited the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) earlier in 2023.
While 11 members cast their votes in Thursday's internal election, only three had formally informed the Maldives parliament of their party switch.
Once all members of the party who are currently in parliament submit their letters of party switch to the parliament secretariat and enter the registry, The Democrats will become a minority party in the legislative.
