The fifth weather observatory will be established at Noonu atoll Maafaru, confirms the government.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) is collaborating with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to launch a large-scale initiative to mobilize resources towards establishing Global Observation Network compliancy across the Maldives.
This initiative is part of the Systematic Observation Financing Facility developed by the United Nations Multiparty Trust Fund (UNMTF) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

MET in a post on X confirmed the inception workshop for the SOFF funded UNEP investment phase kicked off on Tuesday, June 3rd.
MET confirms the equipment in all of its four facilities established across the country would be upgraded under a four-year programme.
The initiative consists of upgrading the radiosonde tracker system established at the Addu werather observatory.
Besides equipment upgrades, the initiative also consists of conducting relevant training to improve the skills of the personnel involved in the weather forecast operations.
The workshop was attended by MET Office personnel and UNEP officials. As technical consultants, a contingency of 40 experts from the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) and Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Asia and Africa (RIMES) attended the workshop as well.
