President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced that the Administration has reduced electricity tariffs for the domestic category, providing meaningful relief to citizens, and affirmed that the Government is committed to ensuring the measure’s sustainability through all available means. The President made this assurance during an interview with Public Service Media (PSM).
In line with his presidential pledge to reduce electricity tariff rates – a longstanding concern among the population – the President urged authorities to implement the reduction effectively and ensure its continued enforcement. He announced this commitment on Friday night through a social media post on his official X account.
The President emphasised that the primary goal of any administration is to ease the lives of its citizens, stating that the people should not have to bear the consequences of inefficiencies in energy policies or the mismanagement of those responsible for them.
Explaining that the reduction in domestic electricity tariffs aims to provide electricity in the most convenient and accessible way, the President assured that the Government would take all necessary measures to manage the situation sustainably, while also recognising the need for improvement by electricity service providers.
The President noted that, to his knowledge, this is the first time a Maldivian government has taken such a step to alleviate the burden on its people caused by poor energy policy management. He reiterated that a Government’s role is to reduce the difficulties faced by its citizens.
He further emphasised the Administration’s commitment to significant investment in the renewable energy sector. The President added that the Administration aims to transition 30 per cent of the country’s energy consumption to renewable sources by 2028 – a goal he described as key to improving the efficiency of electricity providers and offsetting the impact of reduced tariff rates.
In accordance with his presidential pledge, the Government has previously offered discounts and waived portions of electricity bills during Ramadan over the past two years. President Dr Muizzu’s Administration also cancelled outstanding fines for non-payment of electricity and water bills at domestic rates, aiming to improve the financial situation of ordinary citizens.
In addition to this year’s Ramadan discounts, the Government also extended discounts into the following month (April 2025), citing the spike in electricity consumption during the heatwave, thereby providing further relief to the public.
