Scammers stole more than USD 481,000 in just one week, the Police Anti-Scam Centre has reported.
According to the police, a total of 45 scams were reported between May 13 and 19. The police recovered MVR 383,610.08 out of MVR 481,520.67 lost to scams, which represents 80 percent of the stolen amount.
E-commerce scams were the most common of the reported cases, with twenty-six such cases reported. Of these, 20 incidents involved Facebook Marketplace.
Other types of scams reported include 10 foreign currency exchange scams, five phone and impersonation, and additional cases of phishing, romance scams and fraudulent money deposits.
