President vows tangible progress on achieving citizens’ aspirations in 2026

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, on Thursday, vowed that 2026, by the grace of Almighty Allah, will bring tangible progress towards fulfilling the aspirations of the citizens.
He made the remark in an address to the nation to commemorate the new year.
In his address, the President said Maldivians have repeatedly reaffirmed their commitment to development, prosperity and progress, noting that this spirit has been evident throughout the country’s history. He added that, in light of this, the administration’s primary duty is to foster skilled and ethical citizens while pushing forward the national development agenda to ensure the Maldives attains developed-nation status.
He also pointed out that the coming year marks 900 years since the Maldives embraced Islam, describing the anniversary as a moment of deep significance for the current generation.
The President further stressed that the new year offers an opportunity for reflection on how individuals can contribute to their own growth, to society and to the nation as a whole, and to renew their commitment to promoting the welfare and well-being of all.
Notably, the President dubbed last year as a “golden year” of housing with a record amount allocated from the state budget for housing projects. However, by the end of the year, only 10 percent of the housing budget had been spent, leaving 90 percent untouched, with just a few projects underway.
In separate messages, the President also extended new year greetings to foreign leaders, their governments and citizens and international organizations.
In the message addressed to friendly nations, the President conveyed warm greetings and best wishes to their leaders, governments and citizens on the occasion. He expressed confidence that, through focus and dedication, the year ahead would help realise a renewed vision and open promising opportunities for enhanced cooperation between governments and peoples.
In the message to international organizations, the President extended greetings to the heads and hardworking staff of international organizations, expressing his hope to further strengthen working relations and to reinforce collective efforts in the multilateral arena in areas of shared benefit to the peoples of all member countries.
