Maldives' state revenue and grants rises 11.6 percent

State revenue and grants increased by 11.6 percent, according to the Weekly Fiscal Development Report released by the Ministry of Finance and Public Enterprises.
The report shows that as of April 16, total state revenue and grants reached USD 882 million. During the same period last year, it stood at USD 792 million, reflecting an 11.6 percent increase.
Total government expenditure rose to USD 778 million, compared to approximately USD 668 million during the same period last year, an increase of 16.9 percent. As a result, the state budget currently records a surplus of USD 104 million.
A key change highlighted in last week’s report is the restructuring of government ministries and agencies following recent cabinet and institutional changes. These updates, announced on April 15 by the President’s Office, are now reflected in the report tables. The Finance Ministry stated that the aim is to present government financial accounts in line with the current administrative structure.
Looking at revenue, tax income reached USD 707 million, compared to USD 590 million in the same period of 2025, an increase of 19.7 percent. Of this, USD 383 million came from Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The largest increase came from Tourism GST (TGST), which reached USD 279 million by April 16, marking a 17.5 percent increase compared to last year. Other tourism-related revenue streams also showed growth. Green tax revenue rose toUSD 49.8 million, while departure tax generated USD 42.1 million
On the expenditure side, recurrent spending reached USD 687 million, a 14.6 percent increase compared to last year. Capital expenditure saw a significant rise of 39.9percent at USD 84.3 million
Within recurrent expenditure, USD 259 million was spent on salaries and pensions, while administrative and operational expenses amounted t USD 435 million. The report also notes that the largest increase in spending was on subsidies, totaling USD 90.8 million, which is a 36.2 percent rise compared to the same period last year.
