Nasheed warns President Waheed not to set foot in Addu City

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who was forced to resign from office after the Maldives Police Service and the Maldives National Defence Force refused to carry out Nasheed’s unconstitutional and unlawful orders against his political opponents, has warned the current President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik not to set foot in Addu City. Nasheed’s “advice” to the President, urging him to rethink his visit to the largest population base in the country after capital Malé, has come on the eve of President Waheed’s planned visit to the City on coming Sunday. Nasheed gave the warning, speaking in a special meeting of his party leaders and supporters at Addu City last night. According to Nasheed “it would not be prudent for Dr. Waheed to visit Addu City after turning back on the dreams of the people of the city”. In his speech, Nasheed also said that “the only legal authority in the country at present is the People’s Majlis”, and called upon the Majlis not to let President Waheed enter its Annual Opening Session next month. Nasheed said that “if Dr. Waheed enters the Majlis, it would mean undermine the authority of the Constitution”, ironically forgetting that he committed more than one act of violating the constitution, against the Supreme Court of the Maldives which he expressly stated was established in accordance with proper legal procedures. Dr. Waheed, Nasheed’s Deputy, was constitutionally sworn in as President following Nasheed’s resignation on the 7th of this month. One day after resignation, Nasheed changed his mind, claimed that he was ousted in a coup d’état, and his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activists carried out widespread acts of violence in Addu City and some other islands of the country against the Government, causing damage to public property worth more than MRF250 million Rufiyaa. Nasheed repeated his claim that his presidency was brought to an end by the use of illegal force during his speech last night as well. He said that he “will become the president of the Maldives again”, and assured the people of Addu City that he would appoint a Deputy President from Addu City. “When I become the President of this country again, I will appoint a Deputy President from Addu City, and that person would be someone who loves this country, and does not rebel”, said Nasheed. Nasheed also gave a long list of “development plans for Addu City”. According to the list, he would built all the roads in Addu City, establish an international hospital in the City, and establish a system of higher education that would benefit the whole country. “I am trying to get back to the seat of Presidency not for the sake of power, richness, the sweet feelings of satisfaction that it gives, and the good fruits that it bears for me, but in order to pave the way for developing the nation for the coming generations”, said Nasheed.
