Parliament Clears Ex-Minister Rameela’s Appointment to HRCM

The Parliament on Wednesday approved the appointment of Dr Aishath Rameela to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Dr Rameela, who was this Administration’s first Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, received overwhelming support with 63 lawmakers voting in favour of her appointment during Wednesday’s Parliament sitting.
Her selection comes as the term of the commission's chairperson, Mariyam Muna, is set to expire, necessitating the appointment of a new member.
The process, in line with the legal mandate, involved the President's Office opening nominations, followed by the President submitting candidates to Parliament for approval before the final appointment.
Dr Rameela brings a distinguished public service background to the HRCM having served as the Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, a position from which she resigned on 1 December last year due to health considerations.
The five-member HRCM, currently includes President Mariyam Muna, Vice President Mohamed Shafeeq Mahmood, and members Samau Ahmed Najeeb, Ismail Habeeb, and Ahmed Maqsoom.
