A man who stole a motorbike from the basement of Hiyaa tower in Hulhumale’ Phase II has been sentenced to prison.
The man who was sentenced to prison for stealing a motorbike from the basement of Hiyaa Tower 11 has been identified as Mohamed Shafeeu, Thoonu Filige, S. Hithadhoo – an individual who a prior criminal record in similar cases.
Criminal Court, last week, sentenced Shafeeu to one year and 12 months in prison. However, he would have to serve 11 months and 26 days in prison after deducting the period already spent in custody.
The prosecution charged Shafeeu with unlawfully exerting power over another individual’s property in connection with the theft that took place in June of this year.
The motorbike, belonging to an individual from Laamu Atoll, was discovered in Male’, three days after the theft, while Shafeeu was on the motorbike.
Shafeeu had admitted to stealing the motorbike during the trial. However, when initially arrested, Shafeeu had told in a remand hearing that the motorbike had been lent to him by a friend and he was unaware it was a stolen vehicle. A police investigation officer testified during the remand hearing that Shafeeu had failed to identify the “friend” who had lent him the motorbike and their contact number despite arguing otherwise.
According to records, Shafeeu spent 15 days in custody in connection with the theft.
