Maldives condemns Israel’s West Bank settlement expansion

The Government of Maldives has issued a strong condemnation of the Israel government’s decision to approve the construction of 34 new settlements in the Occupied West Bank, describing the move as a serious breach of international law.
In an official statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maldives accused Israel of pursuing a “systematic” policy aimed at seizing land and displacing Palestinians, warning that such actions form part of a broader effort to alter the status of the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The Maldivian government said the expansion of settlements contravenes established legal frameworks, including United Nations Security Council Resolution 2334, which calls on Israel to halt settlement activity in occupied territories.
Calling for a coordinated global response, the Maldives urged the international community to “uphold its legal and moral responsibilities”, ensure accountability, and take concrete steps to compel Israel to cease what it described as illegal practices against the Palestinian people.
The statement also reaffirmed the Maldives’ longstanding support for Palestinian statehood. It reiterated backing for the right of Palestinians to self-determination and endorsed the creation of an independent state based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
