AFC warns Maldives of FIFA suspension if government influences FAM
AFC ’s warning is in the wake of Sports Minister Ahmed Zuhoor’s request to postpone the FAM elections due to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC)’s ongoing investigations into FAM’s alleged corruption case. However, FAM had announced that they will go ahead with the elections. In AFC’s letter to FAM on Monday, AFC declared their acceptation of all activities of FAM’s FIFA appointed Normalisation Committee since its founding on December 2, 2014 and decreed that the elections must proceed without delay. The letter added that representatives from FIFA and AFC will arrive to observe the elections. The letter elaborated that AFC and FIFA monitor all aspects of FAM and should the government interfere and influence FAM’s proceedings, they may face a suspension from FIFA which will ban the Maldives from all football activities.
