Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Mr. Abdulla Shahid has confirmed China’s pledge on donating an additional batch of 400,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses.
The cabinet minister had confirmed this during an interview to a local online media, stating that the Chinese President Xi Jinping had earlier confirmed with his Maldivian counterpart Ibrahim Mohamed Solih regarding the donation.
On March 2021, Chinese government had donated a total of 200,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses to Maldives.
With their latest pledge to donate additional vaccine dose batches, China will have donated a total of 600,000 vaccine doses making them the largest donor to the island nation.
China’s pledge come as glad tidings to Maldives following the latter’s South Asian ally, India had suffered a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases which forced its government on banning export of Covishield vaccines to its neighbors.
