Govt finishes draft bill to pave the path for organ transplants

The government has finished work on the first draft of legislature needed to pave the path for organ transplants in the Maldives, says Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim.
The government had announced the decision to formulate laws to introduce organ transplants in the Maldives back in May 2024.
In an episode of SSTV’s Baaru Hathareh on Wednesday night, Nazim said the government has finished the first draft of the bill, and is currently in the process of discussing and finalizing it before sending it to the Parliament for approval.
He said that the bill was drafted with input from both local and international medical professionals.
“We have prepared the first draft of the legislature under consultation from foreign experts and local health professionals. We are engaged in additional discussions with relevant stakeholders. We will send the bill to the Parliament once these discussions are wrapped up,” he said.
Nazim said that the introduction of organ transplants and other such services will take the Maldives’ healthcare system to the next level.
He also highlighted the need to increase facilities and upgrade the operation theaters in hospitals in preparation of organ transplants.
