During this second announcement seeking a judge for the vacated seat on the Supreme Court bench, Chief Judge of the High Court Hussain Shaheed has sent in his application.
The deadline set for applications by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) was 10am this morning. By the deadline, a total of three applications had been received. These are from HC Chief Judge Shaheed, former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and lawyer Rusdhullah Ibrahim.
JSC initially announced the vacancy last week, at which time only Nihayath applied. The JSC reannounced the vacancy, stating that they had not received a sufficient number of applications.
The Supreme Court bench has a vacancy due to the resignation of former Judge HusnuSuood.
Shaheed was appointed as a High Court judge on July 24, 2018. He was appointed Chief Judge of High Court on October 26, 2023.
Nihayath has earlier served as a Civil Court judge, and also worked as a Deputy Prosecutor General and Assistant Prosecutor General.
