Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy has said Coast Guard Ship Imaduddin will showcase the capability and prestige of the Maldivian military at sea.
The remarks were made at the commissioning ceremony of the Coast Guard vessel donated by the Australian Government.
Major General Hilmy highlighted growing regional security challenges and said efforts are needed at national and international levels to protect the country’s sovereignty and interests. He said the Coast Guard plays a key role in law enforcement, maritime safety and security in Maldivian waters.
The Chief of Defence Force said the new vessel will strengthen the military’s ability to respond to threats and challenges at sea. He added that the vessel will represent Maldives during international visits and maritime engagements.
Hilmy further said the government is working to strengthen national security capabilities across land, sea and air. He noted defence developments, including the acquisition of a modern Turkish naval vessel and the establishment of a special boat squadron for underwater and maritime operations, as results of these efforts. He also said the government is working on providing V-interceptor craft for coastal security before this year’s Victory Day.
The Coast Guard vessel was commissioned by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu at a ceremony held at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hulhumale’ Port. The vessel was donated by Australia under the Australian Defence Cooperation Programme as a symbol of the close relations between both countries.
The ship was built by Austal Limited at the Henderson Shipyard in Perth, Australia. Before its arrival in the Maldives, MNDF Coast Guard personnel underwent specialised training and familiarisation trials in Australia to operate the vessel.
During the commissioning ceremony, the Maldivian national flag was raised at the front of the vessel, and MNDF flag was raised at the rear. The commissioning pennant was also placed on the main halyard.
The ceremony was attended by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Chief of Defence Force Major General Ibrahim Hilmy, and Australian High Commissioner to the Maldives David Jessup.
The donation forms part of President Muizzu’s efforts to strengthen MNDF’s defence capabilities and expand Coast Guard capacity.
