Nasheed asks India to intervene if Emergency Rule is imposed

Mohamed Nasheed، the former President of Maldives and leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)، had urged India to intervene if Emergency Rule is imposed in Maldives.
President Nasheed made his statement in an interview with the Indian newspaper Economic Times.
Nasheed said that Jumhooree Party، who had a huge role in bringing PPM as the ruling party، had now joined the opposition MDP and soon the majority of People’s Majlis will belong to MDP and JP.
“Meanwhile، President Yameen will try and abolish the Constitution and the People’s Majlis، and continue the remaining three years of his term after imposing the Emergency Rule.”
The leader of the opposition further said that losing the majority in the parliament would push President Yameen for a resignation due to the several difficulties he would face in parliamentary proceedings.
“An interim election will be held after Yameen resigns. We will elect Qasim Ibrahim as the president، and his cabinet will consist of MDP members as well. In 2018، MDP will put forth a presidential candidate for the elections. Qasim and his party will support MDP.”
In addition، Nasheed noted that if situation in Maldives is worsening، President Yameen will impose the Emergency Rule and start arresting Political entities.
“Under such circumstances he will ensure mass arrests including my arrest. I urge India، as our closest neighbour، to intervene at that stage to ensure safety and security of political activists.”
