HRCM calls to allow for peaceful assembly within the legal framework

The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has urged law enforcement agencies to uphold the constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
HRCM stated that it has been monitoring the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s protests in Male' since March 7 and urged to also allow for media coverage without interference.
The commission called on the police to use force only when necessary and within the legal framework.
HRCM also condemned derogatory remarks made against a child during the protests, stressing that freedom of expression should not be used to harm the dignity and reputation of children.
The commission urged authorities to take necessary measures to prevent such incidents.
Emphasizing responsible exercise of constitutional rights, HRCM highlighted the importance of balancing freedom of expression and respect for others' rights to maintain societal stability.
The statement noted that clashes had occurred between police and protesters, resulting in injuries.
Protesters reportedly used loudspeakers and attempted to enter restricted areas in Male', leading to police intervention, the statement read.
HRCM urged protesters to maintain peace and avoid causing inconvenience to those using roads.
