Police have launched an investigation into a case where a mother allegedly sexually assaulted her son while under the influence of alcohol.
The incident, which reportedly occurred in the Male' area, was brought to the attention of authorities on October 28, according to police. The child sustained injuries in the incident.
Police said the Ministry of Social and Family Development has alleged that the child was physically abused by his mother. The woman is accused of sexually assaulting the child while intoxicated.
The suspect, a 50-year-old woman, was arrested on Monday under a court order. She was presented before the Criminal Court and remanded in custody for 30 days.
Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
Child sexual abuse remains a persistent issue in the Maldives. Such crimes are often perpetrated by family members or close relatives and are significantly underreported compared to the actual prevalence.
