Promoting healthy eating requires both awareness and access to nutritious food choices: First Lady

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stated that while raising awareness of good dietary habits is important, it is equally essential for food outlets and vendors to provide healthy options that support these positive lifestyle choices.
She made these remarks while speaking at the ceremony held today in K. Guraidhoo, to inaugurate the Dhulhaheyo Dhiriulhun, Ufaaveri Mujuthamau preventive healthcare campaign.
In her speech, she remarked that while information on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is disseminated, the societal pathways that facilitate such conditions must be addressed. Furthermore, she noted that while the importance of physical activity and exercise is promoted, time must be allocated for them in daily schedules.
Highlighting the importance of a national movement to raise awareness about the health risks associated with poor lifestyle choices and dietary patterns, the First Lady stated that learning and adopting such positive habits are the keys to a healthy and happy life.
She noted that Islam also emphasises sound health and good lifestyle practices, highlighting the Holy Quran's instruction to consume that which is halal and wholesome. Observing that the life of a complete Muslim is built on activity, she added that the diligent lifestyle and sound dietary habits of Muslims would help maintain the Maldives as a happy and healthy nation.
The First Lady concluded her remarks by calling on all citizens to participate wholeheartedly in this important national campaign, launched for the well-being of future generations.
The campaign is part of a public health promotion effort, aiming to raise awareness to protect citizens from diseases that are becoming prevalent in the Maldives due to diet and lifestyle patterns. Under the slogan Dhulhaheyo Dhiriulhun, Ufaaveri Mujuthamau, the campaign is set to roll out sustainable public health activities across all islands of the Maldives, targeting children, young people, women, and the elderly to promote and encourage healthy living.
Additionally, three awards have been introduced to recognise and encourage entities that best promote public health through the campaign's work and activities. These are the Rashu Award, School Award, and Jamiyyaa Award, presented under the campaign's theme.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health, Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, senior officials from the ministry, Member of Parliament for the Maafushi constituency, Hussain Riza Adam, and a large number of residents from Guraidhoo.
