“Veshi Fannu”, developed in Eydhafushi, Baa Atoll, by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on the initiative of Eydhafushi Council, has been officially opened.
The project includes a swimming area and a public square for residents.
The facility was officially opened by Member of Parliament Ahmed Saleem, MTCC’s Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed and Eydhafushi Council President Mohamed Fathih during a ceremony held on 9 May.
According to the council president, the project cost approximately USD 324,255. He noted that the island lacked a proper beach and swimming area since land reclamation work carried out in 2014. The project improves the quality of life of residents, he said.
Fathih said the previous councils had included the project in previous land use plans to restore a beach area for the island. The lack of a swimming area has been a long-standing concern by senior citizens, he noted. He added that the area is already being widely used by residents of all ages. The project is expected to provide a safe swimming area.
Development works under the project included dredging 15,914 cubic metres for the swimming area, 160 metres of geobag revetment, 60 metres of rock boulder breakwater, and 70 metres of groyne protection structures.
