Over 58 percent revenue hike from departure tax, airport fee

Data from the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has shown that revenue from departure tax and airport development fees have increased by 58.6 percent in comparison to 2025.
These two fees comprise of the taxes taken from airports in the Maldives, the combined total of which amounts to USD 23.86 million. This is in contrast to the USD 15.04 million received in 2025 for the same period.
According to MIRA, USD 11.67 million has been received as part of departure fees in January. This is a 56.5 percent increase compared to the USD 7.45 million obtained in 2025 for the same period.
In airport development taxes, USD 12.48 million was attained last month, a 60.6 percent growth from the USD 7.59 million for the same period last year.
The departure tax has been in effect from 1st January 2022, whereas airport development fees were established from 1st May 2017. Airport development fees are taken from all passengers flying abroad from Velana International Airport (VIA).
Departure fees will be exempted from transit passengers and children under two years of age, whereas exceptions to airport development fees include direct transit passengers. Individuals with diplomatic immunity are exempt from both taxes.
