President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that citizens have the fundamental right to access a responsible media that delivers accurate and verified information, while upholding the values and standard of an islamic society. He reaffirmed that the Administration remains firmly committed to safeguarding this right.
The President made these remarks this morning while delivering the Presidential Address at the first sitting of the first session of the 20th People’s Majlis for the year.
Emphasising the importance of a strong and professional media sector, the President stated that a responsible media environment is essential for maintaining national stability, effectively communicating development progress, and ensuring public safety and security. Highlighting initiatives undertaken to support the media sector, the President noted that, for the first time in Maldivian history, the State Budget has allocated direct financial assistance to media organisations. Under this initiative, a total of MVR 27,295,532.69 has been disbursed to 40 media outlets.
Addressing the financial challenges faced by media organisations, particularly the high cost of office and studio rentals, the President announced that work on establishing a Media Village is progressing rapidly. The project aims to provide media organisations with facilities at significantly subsidised rates, enabling them to reinvest resources into development and growth. The Media Village, located in Hulhumalé Phase 1, will comprise 34 units. The President stated that the facility is expected to be completed and made available for media use by mid-year.
