Design phase of China-Maldives Friendship Hospital in Vilimale’ commences

Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has signed a Letter of Exchange with the Government of China on Wednesday to initiate the design phase of the hospital being developed in Vilimale’ with grant assistance from Chine.
The Letter of Exchange on initiating the detailed design phase of the Vilimale’ China-Maldives Friendship Hospital Project was signed by Construction Minister Abdulla Muthalib and Ambassador of China to the Maldives Kong Xianhua.
According to the Ministry, feasibility study for 112-bed hospital has already been completed and today marks the official commencement of the projects detailed design phase.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the Chinese government’s decision to fully fund the development a tertiary hospital in Vilimale’ back in last year’s January while based in China as he undertook a state visit to the nation.
In March, he announced that the government had allocated land from Vilimale’ for the project, and that physical works would begin as soon as the technical work wraps up.
In May, Maldives and China signed a letter of exchange regarding conducting a feasibility study for the project.
President Muizzu has named improving access to healthcare as a top priority for his administration, and has said that the construction of the new hospital in Vilimale’ will eliminate the need for residents of the district to travel to Male’ City to access medical services.
