President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed the Maldives Police Service to launch a special operation targeting individuals involved in the illicit drug trade. The President made this announcement via an X post today.
In his post, the President announced that more than 100 locations across the Maldives will be simultaneously searched as part of the Government’s initiative to eradicate drugs from the country. Over 500 police officers will be deployed to execute this coordinated effort.
The President has highlighted that significant measures have been undertaken to address the drug problem in the Maldives, including the development and implementation of a national framework encompassing legal safeguards, treatment, and rehabilitation.
As part of the Government's efforts to address the drug crisis, rehabilitation centres have been established in N. Velidhoo, K. Kaashidhoo, and L. Gan. The President further affirmed the State’s commitment to supporting individuals’ post-treatment, ensuring every effort is made to prevent relapse and facilitate successful reintegration.
