The new "Shaheed Ali" school, slated to open for the new academic year in January, is expected to alleviate classroom space constraints in Hulhumale' Phase 2 for at least the next two years, according to the Ministry of Education.
Currently, Salahuddeen School is the only institution in Phase 2 offering education up to Grade 10. The opening of Shaheed Ali School will double the number of secondary schools in the area, significantly boosting educational capacity.
The Minister of State for Education Hussain Saeed Mohamed confirmed to PSM News that enrollment for the new school has already begun, with over 600 children having expressed interest so far.
"All students living in Phase 2 who need placements will be accommodated. Students from the Atolls and students in Male’ city will also get placements," he said.
He reassured parents that with both Salahuddeen School and the new Shaheed Ali School operating, there will be no space constraints for students for the next two years.
The construction of the Shaheed Ali school is progressing at a fast pace. The building's concrete work is complete, and finishing touches are now underway. The school is on track to be fully completed by November, allowing it to open its doors for the upcoming academic year.
The new facility boasts a capacity for 1,500 students but can accommodate between 2,000 and 2,500 children by utilising two class shifts. It features 54 air-conditioned classrooms, a multipurpose hall, a turf ground, and other modern amenities.
Local construction firm, Rasheed Carpentry and Construction Pvt Ltd (RCC) is building the school under a contractor financing model, initiated by the President in December 2023.
While the new school is a significant step towards addressing the educational needs of the growing population in Hulhumale' Phase 2, the Ministry has indicated that further school development is planned for the area. The addition of Shaheed Ali School marks a crucial milestone in the government's strategy to provide accessible and high-quality education to the community.
