Verdict looms in Airport Development Charge case
Opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP) Vice President Imad Solih filed the case claiming that the charges, which were approved by the Finance Ministry, violate the constitution. Judge Ali Rasheed, who is presiding over the case, ended today's hearing announcing that a chance will be given to the defendant and prosecution to deliver summarised statements at the next hearing and that a verdict will be delivered at the hearing after the next. Attorney General's (AG) Office today presented a statement on behalf of the Finance Ministry with the state attorney Aishath Shyza mainly repeating her argument that the charge, which she said is to be taken under the Airport Service Charge Act, is not a tax. Imad Solih reiterated his previous comments that the agreement signed between GMR and the government stipulates that a fee can only be charged from customers for airport development as stipulated by the Act. GMR tried to include the fee in the airline tickets but failed after the International Air Transport Association (IATA) refused to provide the specialised code to include the charge. The company decided to collect the fee at the check-in counters commencing January.
