Maldives' central bank delays unveiling of new currency notes

In a statement Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) said the launch of the new currency series' notes has been postponed, but did not specify a reason. MMA said a date for the launch will be announced later. The official launch of the new currency series was slated for October 5. The series was to be inaugurated by President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. So it is believed that the launch has been postponed following the explosion aboard the presidential speedboat carrying the president and the first lady on Monday. President Yameen was unhurt but first lady Fathimath Ibrahim suffered a spinal fracture while two presidential aides suffered injuries including burns. “Ran dhiha faheh” currency series, introduced on the occasion of Independence 50, includes MVR 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and the brand new MVR 1000. The series also introduced MVR 5 as coins instead of the current cash note.
