Three-year-old Mohamed Ibthihaal was in January found dead in his home on Rakeedhoo Island of Vaavu Atoll. His mother Afiya Mohamed confessed after the prosecution read out the charges. "I confess," Afiya said when the Judge questioned her about the charges. The Judge then specifically asked her if she had strangled her son and kicked him in the chest, Afiya calmly replied "yes." The defence had tried to object but the Judge continued with the questions stressing that the defendant is required to respond to the charges. The prosecution pleaded the court for more time citing that new evidence had come to light which could effect the charges. The State had in January filed two charges against Afiya; murdering a child and disobeying orders. His wounds clearly indicated that he was brutally beaten to death. Afiya had confessed to the violence during the investigation and the remand hearing as well. The Police said that she claimed that the islanders’ talk of Ibthihaal’s conception had frustrated Afiya and she had grown to ‘hate’ her son. Afiya is also the mother of two other children. She was reportedly sexually abused by several members of her family. Ibthihaal was conceived during one of the sexual assaults.
