The former President, Mohamed Nasheed’s international team of lawyers are coming to the Maldives to meet the former President, says the former President’s office.
President Nasheed’s Office issued a statement tonight saying that the Department of Immigration and Emigration has notified them that the business VISAs for Ben Emmerson, QC, Amal Clooney and Jared Genser are ready.
“The Attorney General’s Office has notified today that they have requested the Controller of Immigration to issue business VISAs for the lawyers appointed by to President Nasheed to represent him in the U.N. Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to come to the Maldives and meet him.” The Statement said.
The former President’s Office said that on 20 July, the Department of Immigration has said that the business VISA for Jared Genser cannot be arranged.
“The Office of President Nasheed was told that a letter from the Supreme Court is needed to arrange the Business VISA. But on 5 August 2015, that department said that the letter required is not from the Supreme Court and a similar letter is required from the Attorney General’s Office.” The former President’s Office said.
The state has appealed the former President’s 13-year prison sentence at the High Court last Thursday.
