Members appointed to Committee to investigate Nasheed

The Parliament has appointed members to the temporary Committee formed under the resolution which stipulates the investigation of the illegal activities carried out by former President Mohamed Nasheed.
The seven-member committee nominated by Thimarafushi MP Ahmed Shareef was approved with 44 votes in favour, and 24 votes against it.
The Committee is made up of Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed, Fares Maathoda MP Ibrahim Mutthalib, Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza, Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir, Vilimaafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik, Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed and Kin’bidhoo MP Moosa Zameer.
The resolution sent to Parliament by Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir alleges that Nasheed threatened and influenced judicial institutions, locked up the Supreme Court, issued illegal orders in conflict with court rulings, and issued orders to carry out illegal activities against Judges. It also states that Nasheed, as Commander-in-Chief, illegally ordered the arrest of several Members of Parliament, made illegal use of the government budget, disregarded equality of citizens and prioritised the needs of people of a certain political view, and encouraged hostility and anger in the society.
This is the first time that a temporary Committee is formed by the Parliament to investigate the actions of a former President since the Maldives adopted the Parliamentary system.
However the $800 million corruption case involving former President Gayoom and his brother Abdullah Yameen was also sent to the National Security Committee for investigation.
