President welcomes Google’s strategic investment in the Maldives’ digital future

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has welcomed Google’s decision to invest in a new international submarine cable landing station and network facility in Hithadhoo, Addu City, describing it as a strong signal of global confidence in the Maldives’ stable, transparent, and investor-friendly environment.
In a post on his official X account, President Dr Muizzu stated that the project is a major step forward for the Maldives, advancing the nation’s goal of becoming a diversified, inclusive, and digitally empowered economy. The facility is expected to position the Maldives as a regional digital hub, strengthening connectivity and resilience across Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
The investment follows discussions between President Dr Muizzu and Google executives in New York in September 2024 and marks a key milestone in the Government’s efforts to enhance the Maldives’ role in the global digital economy. The Addu City facility will support multiple international submarine cable systems, contributing to a distributed network across the north, central, and southern Maldives.
Valued at tens of millions of dollars, the project is expected to stimulate growth in sectors such as cloud services, fintech, and digital content, supporting the Government’s drive to diversify the economy beyond tourism and create high-skilled, future-ready employment opportunities for Maldivians. Collaboration with Dhiraagu and Ooredoo Maldives will ensure local expertise and knowledge transfer, strengthening the project’s long-term success.
As part of Google’s Dhivaru Trans-Indian Ocean subsea cable system, the facility will serve as one of two new regional connectivity hubs, offering enhanced cable switching, local content caching, and colocation capabilities, further reinforcing the Maldives’ strategic role as a digital gateway in the Indian Ocean.
