President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih will only support candidates of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), says party leader Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed, a former president, said this on Saturday at an event to put up posters of MDP for April’s parliamentary election.
Speaking at the event, Nasheed denied claims that the President would also support candidates of other parties and said that neither he nor President Solih wish for MDP members to vote for anyone other than the party’s candidates.
However, Qasim Ibrahim, the leader of coalition partner Jumhooree Party (JP), at a recent news conference said that he has asked President Solih to also give his support to JP candidates.
Nasheed, who is vying for the Central Mahchangolhi seat, said that MDP has enough members in each constituency for their candidates to win, which would result in the party receiving majority in parliament.
Condemning former vice president, and special advisor to Qasim, Mohamed Jameel’s criticisms of MDP’s proposed amendments for the next parliament, Nasheed said that he should have proposed better alternatives.
MDP is contesting all constituencies except Nilandhoo. While the party has recently discussed giving up six constituencies to coalition partner Adhaalath Party, most of the MDP candidates who won the respective constituencies in the primary election has said they are unwilling to give up their party tickets, and MDP has now given the candidacy applications to the Elections Commission.
