BML to issue Visa debit cards to all customers again
Following the US dollar shortage faced by the Maldives in 2010, BML had stopped issuing Visa debit cards to those who did not have a dollar account. However, the bank had in 2013 started renewing expired Visa debit cards. In a statement, BML said that Visa debit cards will be issued until July 6 only to Maldivian students abroad and those who are leaving abroad for studies. But after that, Visa debit cards will be issued to all the customers, the bank said. However, the bank said that only expatriate workers with dollar accounts with BML will be issued Visa debit cards. BML's CEO Andrew J. Healy was quoted in the statement as saying that the decision was made under the bank's policy of equality amongst all their customers. The decision will help a lot of Maldivian students abroad, he said. A maximum amount of MVR 10,000 can be withdrawn from local ATMs at a time using the Visa debit card. In ATMs around the globe, $200 may be withdrawn on the spot via the debit card, and POS transactions worth $400. For first time card applicants, BML now issues American Express cards, which cannot be used outside the country. In order to improve their services, BML has now arranged for some of their card services to be made available in various branches of the bank such as their Majeedhee Magu Branch and the Main Branch.
