Over 11,000 resort employees sent off on no-pay

The Tourism Employers Association of Maldives (TEAM) has confirmed more than 11,000 of resort employees have been sent off on no-pay leaves amid the viral outbreak.
While the viral pandemic has significantly slowed down the economic activities across the globe, the impact showed drastic adversarial effects on Maldivian economy as well.
Meanwhile, TEAM has published a list of all the resorts where the no-pay leave was executed, on social media. In addition to this, the published list also includes tourist properties that sliced employee salaries.
The association, working to protect and preserve the rights of employees in the tourism sector bemoaned the massive no-pay leave send off claiming the workers’ rights must be upheld.
TEAM’s list has become public at a time when Labor Relations Authority of Maldives confirmed of several reports of illegal redundancy at various companies and firms.
Labor Relations Authority attested they were receiving complaints of illegal conduct by many employers against their employees – including the complete omission of salaries and allowances, no-pay leaves along with redundancies.
Maldives government had earlier announced of its Economic Recovery Plan, in hopes of moderately offsetting the overall fiscal damage local companies and firms expected to face.
Government announced of an MVR2.5 billion economic stimulus, the working capital fund will issued to companies which does not terminate their employees.
Labor Relations Authority had also facilitated a complaints window effective from 01 March until 15 April, for employees to lodge complaints if changes were brought to their contractual terms or conditions.
At a time when the entire local economy has come to a standstill, Ministry of Economic Development recently acknowledged on the blow-back several industries apart from the tourism sector were facing due to insufficient business activity.
