The Elections Commission stated that announcement of Local Council Elections’ temporary results will be concluded on Sunday.
The commission has already announced the temporary results of some constituencies in the local elections which were held last week Saturday. The EC declared in a tweet late Saturday that the rest of the temporary results will be revealed Sunday morning.
Neither the Elections General Act nor the Decentralisation Act specify a certain period of time during which temporary results are to be released. However, the latter states that the final results must be announced within a fortnight of the elections.
Meanwhile, the Elections Commission have also recounted a number of ballot boxes to confirm the results. However, a member of the commission confirmed that they did not find any errors or problems that could affect the results in any way.
The results released so far show that main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has succeeded the majority of council seats. Ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has also admitted defeat in the Local Council Elections.
