The United Kingdom has expressed it’s concern as former President of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed is taken back to the prison on Sunday.
Minister of State at UK’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office Hugo Swire said in a statement released on Monday night، that he is concerned by former President Nasheed’s return to prison after a period of house arrest.
Swire noted that the international community has repeatedly raised concerns over the trial of President Nasheed which was not conducted in a transparent and impartial manner. Swire noted that Nasheed was not afforded due legal process during the trial.
Minister of State Mr. Swire also called on Maldives to practice true judicial independence in all court cases and appeals in order to restore faith in the Maldives’ legal system.
“I also continue to encourage genuine political dialogue between all parties and the release of all political prisoners، including former President Nasheed، to help re-establish confidence in democracy in the Maldives.”
