"Govt. should obey UN’s rulings" – Nasheed’s lawyers

The legal team of the former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the Government should obey the decision made by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD).
Speaking at a press conference held last night at Salt Cafe’، lawyer Ibrahim Riffath said that it is compulsory for Maldives to obey the international treaties signed and therefore obey UN’s rulings.
Riffat said the working group reflected upon two important international treaties which upholds rule of law and ensure rights of a person.
While Maldives have signed international treaties، Article 93 of the Constitution mandates the signed treaties، Riffath said، adding that the rulings by the working group must be adhered to. “They cannot say no.”
Furthermore، Riffath said the Constitution enforces upholding rule of law and ensuring fundamental rights and the Government must adhere to it.
