ECM opens complaints process over revised voters list

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has re-opened the opportunity to submit complaints regarding voters list which has been amended according to the complaints submissions previously for the upcoming Local Council Elections (LCE) and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) Elections scheduled to take place of the 4th of April 2026.
The ECM revealed that the amended voters have been published on its website and can be viewed from the government’s gazette or through island councils pertaining to island voter’s list. Individuals can also check via SMS (ID No send to 1414)
Complaints will be processed till the 8th of February 03:00pm. The ECM has urged all those submitting complaints to bring charges to the voters list to submit the necessary documentation.
During the initial complaints processing period, ECM received 779 complaints. The most frequent complaints received were about the removal of deceased individuals from the voter’s registry and amendments to islands and addresses.
As per the ECM’s published report of contested seats, 626 seats are being contested for island councils, and 52 seats are being contested for city councils. Of these 133 islands require the elections of council presidents and three councilors, including the special seat designated for female representation. 46 islands require the elections of council president and five councilors, including for the seat designated for female representation. Women’s development committee members need to be elected for all islands where councilors are being elected.
In April elections, the city councilors’ elections will vary. As such Kulhudhuffushi city will be electing seven councilors including the mayor, Thinadhoo city will be electing seven councilors, Fuvahmulah city will be electing nine councilors, Addu city will be electing 11 councilors and Male’ city wil be electing 18 councilors.
